I felt an intense mix of disbelief, anxiety, and shock. A feeling that lingered for days. The last time I experienced something similar was hearing about Robin Williams\u2019 tragic suicide. The contrast between them is stark: Williams brought joy and love into the world, while Kirk spread divisiveness and hate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200bIntellectually, logically, and ethically, I opposed everything Charlie Kirk stood for. I am not American, nor do I follow U.S. politics closely. My only personal stake in his influence was being a person biologically born a woman. But from across the ocean, it\u2019s evident Kirk was not a truth-teller. He was entitled to free speech, yes, but he was not entitled to weaponise it: He was a sexist, racist, misogynist, transphobic, xenophobic, manipulative gaslighter who deliberately spread misinformation to an emotionally charged, millions-strong audience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"275\" height=\"183\" src=\"https:\/\/www.themantrums.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Charliekirk-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-98 size-full\"\/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His followers treated his opinions as fact, perpetuating oppression and violence. Maintaining plausible deniability by citing \u201cfree speech,\u201d he knew harm was likely. Free speech does not mean freedom from consequence. If he had worn a bulletproof vest and voiced safety concerns before the event, as reported, he recognised the potential impact of his words.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200bI do not condone violence, political or otherwise, nor do I believe the end justifies the means. However, suggesting this event was unpredictable ignores the core problem: polarising rhetoric and division inevitably lead to violent outcomes. While political activism, confrontation, and radicalisation are not new causes of such assassinations, no political leaning or ideology is immune to such consequences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200bI\u2019m not here to police reactions to Charlie Kirk\u2019s death. It\u2019s not my place to tell those he actively oppressed\u2014women, people of colour, the differently-abled, the trans community, sexual assault survivors, gun violence victims, genocide casualties, non-religious communities, and others\u2014that celebrating the death of their oppressor is invalid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200bMarginalised people are often forced to be the \u201cbigger person,\u201d to endure oppression with a smile.&nbsp; That said, one could also argue that violence is a tool of the oppressor, and celebrating a violent end to someone comes from a settler-colonial mindset as well. Different reactions are valid. Social commentary suggests that he is just as divisive in death as he was in life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"862\" height=\"485\" src=\"https:\/\/www.themantrums.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/lgbtqia.avif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-99\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.themantrums.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/lgbtqia.avif 862w, https:\/\/www.themantrums.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/lgbtqia-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.themantrums.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/lgbtqia-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 862px) 100vw, 862px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200bImage Credit &#8211; <em>(ABC Everyday: Luke Tribe)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What I do challenge is the continual minimisation, justification, and excusing of his harm. While feeling grief or sadness over a person\u2019s death is justifiable, portraying Charlie Kirk as a martyr is intellectually dishonest. If you grieve someone whose views aligned with yours, by all means, but own it! People should not be assassinated for their political beliefs. Yet, where is that outrage when it comes to the hundreds of thousands of other political deaths every year?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200bThe Trump administration\u2019s response to Charlie Kirk\u2019s assassination shows this double standard. Through symbolic honours and public statements, they framed him as a champion of conservative and Christian values. Trump called him a \u201cmartyr for truth and freedom\u201d and a \u201clasting symbol of patriotism.\u201d There was no comparable response when Minnesota State Representative Melissa Hortman, a Democrat, was tragically assassinated at home on June 14, 2025. This disparity exposes a key partisan divide.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I take no joy in Charlie Kirk\u2019s death, but the irony is hard to ignore. In April 2023, at a Turning Point USA Faith event, he said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I think it\u2019s worth to have a cost of, unfortunately, some gun deaths every single year so that we can have the Second Amendment to protect our other God-given rights. That is a prudent deal.\u201d (Newsweek)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Social media summed up the sentiment:<em> \u201cI\u2019m not ok with Charlie Kirk\u2019s death, but Charlie Kirk would be ok with it.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200bAuthorities and media labelled his killer, Tyler Robinson, as a leftist, trans-chasing activist. Utah police released alleged texts between him and his \u201croommate\/trans partner.\u201d These texts conveyed planning, motives, and fears in a scripted, almost cinematic style, more like a wartime love letter than typical Gen Z communication. Even right-wing habitual misinformation spreader Candace Owens called them \u201cclearly scripted\u201d and argued all messages should include timestamps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/www.themantrums.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Tyler-text-messages-1024x576.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-100\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.themantrums.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Tyler-text-messages-1024x576.webp 1024w, https:\/\/www.themantrums.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Tyler-text-messages-300x169.webp 300w, https:\/\/www.themantrums.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Tyler-text-messages-768x432.webp 768w, https:\/\/www.themantrums.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Tyler-text-messages.webp 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200bImage Credit &#8211; Reuters<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other discourse fuels theories that he was a \u201cGroyper\u201d. Part of the accelerationist, online neo-Nazi wing of the MAGA movement, centred around Nick Fuentes, described as the alt-right\u2019s \u201cHitler Youth\u201d leader. He\u2019s the \u201cyour body, our choice\u201d guy. The jokes write themselves.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" src=\"https:\/\/www.themantrums.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Nick-Fuentes-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-102 size-full\"\/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Groypers often mock MAGA figures like Don Jr. and Ben Shapiro, calling them \u201cConservative Inc.\u201d This comes less from formal ties than from their aesthetics and online behaviour. The memes etched on bullet casings recovered after the assassination included phrases like \u201cnotices bulge OwO what\u2019s this\u201d or \u201cif you read this you are gay LMAO\u201d, and his general \u201cvibe.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200bImage &#8211; Charlie Kirk, Nick Fuentes <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Groypers merge cutting-edge internet culture with mob-style modern fascism. Their figureheads are not polished politicians but viral memes and inside jokes. The original creators disappear; what remains is a weaponised, repackaged ideology that spreads effortlessly. Many of us aren\u2019t chronically online enough to fully decode that rabbit hole, but Patrick Marlborough at Crikey explained it brilliantly for us millennials and boomers<a href=\"https:\/\/www.crikey.com.au\/2025\/09\/19\/tyler-robinson-alleged-charlie-kirk-shooter-groyper-extremism\/\"> here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200bMy reaction to Charlie Kirk\u2019s assassination was shaped not just by shock, but by recognition this violence represents the consequences of unchecked polarisation. A society consumed by rage and division, abetted by governmental irresponsibility and with easy access to weapons, inevitably produces political violence.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not confined to the US, globally, extremism rises when governments stoke hostilities instead of fostering unity. Systemic failure to address division and polarisation breeds violence as an expected, not exceptional, outcome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200bIn the aftermath, President Trump signed an executive order labelling Antifa a &#8220;domestic terrorist organisation&#8221; and called it a &#8220;sick, dangerous, radical left disaster.&#8221; However, the evidence showed that Tyler Robinson leaned further right than left. Suggesting this executive action isn\u2019t to protect people, but rather as an aggressive move to advance a narrative. And, just maybe, implement serious gun reform. But logic has never been this government\u2019s strong suit. Until that changes, political violence will escalate, assassinations will cease to be outliers, and history will record this era for what it truly is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Charlie Kirk\u2019s assassination exposes a nation devouring itself through violence and division, a dynamic echoing beyond its borders. Yet the power of the people should not be underestimated. We must unite to demand accountability, push for meaningful reform, and refuse to accept division and violence as our new normal. Political assassinations are a grim feature of history, yet so too is the people\u2019s ability to rise and demand change.
